Purchase the Book

This web site is now available in textbook format from Primis/McGraw-Hill, Inc. The hardcopy version includes a CD of the Astronomy Notes web site. There are three ways to get the textbook:
  1. College/university bookstores requesting multiple copies of the textbook for classes can contact Primis Custom Publishing Customer Service to place their bookstore orders at 1-800-962-9342.

  2. College professors and others in academia in the United States can purchase the book by calling the McGraw-Hill College Toll Free Customer Service number, 1-800-338-3987. Ask for Astronomy Notes (2002 Update) by Nick Strobel, ISBN 0072848804, custom-published through Primis. College professors can also check with their local McGraw-Hill campus representative. Persons in academia outside the U.S. will need to contact their McGraw-Hill representative listed on the International Offices web page.

  3. People outside of academia in the United States can purchase the book from McGraw-Hill's Direct Marketing Department at 1-800-262-4729. Ask for Astronomy Notes (2002 Update) by Nick Strobel, ISBN 0072848804. If you have problems with the marketing department, contact Donna DeBenedict of the Primis Order Fulfillment at 1-800-962-9342 (she is in New Jersey, USA). You can also contact her via email.

People outside of academia and outside the United States can purchase the book from McGraw-Hill's International Sales Office in Columbus, Ohio (USA) at 1-609-426-5753. Ask for Astronomy Notes (2002 Update) by Nick Strobel, ISBN 0072848804.

  4. PDF versions of each chapter of the textbook are now available from the Primis Online eBookstore. You will need to have version 4.05a (or higher) of the free Adobe Acrobat eBook Reader to view the eBook chapter files. Primis gives you a "digital discount" for purchasing the book in this format, since you will supply the paper if you decide to print the computer files. The eBookstore is still pretty new for Primis and the interface is a bit quirky. Here's how to get the eBook version of the textbook.
    1. Enter the web address for the eBookstore in your web browser: http://www.mhhe.com/primis/online/ebookstore
    2. After the eBookstore homepage fully appears, select the icon called "Buy eBook" (picture of a laptop computer).
    3. If you an already have an account, enter your access information. If not, follow the instructions for a new user.
    4. Select the "Purchase eBook Download" link.
    5. If you already have Adobe Acrobat eBook Reader installed on your system, select the link to buy an eBook. If not, install the eBook Reader, reboot your computer, and access the Primis eBookstore again.
    6. Click on the "Choose the Country" drop-down menu button and drag your mouse down to "USA". The "USA" option will probably already be selected. Click the Continue button.
    7. Click on the "Choose the State" drop-down menu button and drag your mouse down to "California". Click the Continue button.
    8. Click on the "Choose the School" drop-down menu button and drag your mouse down to "Bakersfield College". The "Bakersfield College" option will probably already be selected. Click the Continue button.
    9. Click on the Astronomy Notes chapter drop-down menu button and drag your mouse to the chapter you want to purchase.
    10. Click on the "Show book details" button (yes, it is actually just a chapter instead of the entire book). The ISBN for the chapter and the price will then be displayed. The descriptive text below is the standard one for the entire textbook, not the individual chapter.
    11. Select the "Buy this book" link near the bottom and follow the instructions in the windows that pop up. Initially, there will be a warning window about Acrobat eBook Reader. If you have an up-to-date version of Adobe Acrobat eBook Reader installed on your computer, click the "continue" button. Your web browser must be java-enabled (most web browsers are) for this last step to work. The eBookstore takes MasterCard, Visa, and American Express.

You will need to go through all of the steps for each of the chapter downloads. In the future, the eBookstore interface will be more convenient. If you have problems with your eBookstore purchase, contact Dudley Land at 530-661-3969.
