Ronald E. McNair

Astronaut Ronald McNair tragically died in the STS-51L (Challenger) shuttle explosion. He had completed one other shuttle mission, STS-41B (Challenger), in 1984, on which he served as mission specialist.

McNair graduated from North Carolina A&T State College with a degree in physics.

He later received a Ph.D. in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. McNair held a fifth-degree black belt in karate and was an accomplished jazz saxophonist.

Ronald McNair was born on October 21, 1950, in Lake City, South Carolina, and died January 28, 1986.
