Have you ever seen a shooting star? What you actually saw was a small interplanetary object entering the Earth's atmosphere. Most of these objects burn up before they strike the ground -- but not all. If the object is large enough, it may survive its trip through the atmosphere and strike the ground, explosively carving out a pit called an impact crater.
